Structure

The Network is coordinated by UK-based cardiovascular disease prevention charity, Heart of Mersey, and is part-funded by the World Heart Federation through its partnership with UEFA.

A management group of national contact points, the majority of whom were involved in a 30 month pilot project funded by the European Commission, meet at least once a year to report upon the current status of the Network.

Network management group meetings include country reports from Network focal points, and agreement upon policy and key activities undertaken by the Network. This management group also contains a number of ‘working groups’ dealing with the key themes of: stadia guidance, communications, advocacy and research. A diagram indicating Network governance is shown below:

At the inaugural meeting of the Network’s management group in Dublin (May 2010), the group agreed upon the following priorities and aims for 2010:

  • To provide support for stadia and sports organisations to develop healthy practices
  • To develop and share examples of best practice amongst Network members
  • To provide communications and signposting support to Network members
  • To engage large scale sporting events to develop healthy interventions and a positive health legacy
  • To provide public health consultancy support for stadia and sports organisations
  • To advocate for policy and legislation that will improve levels of health through sport e.g. smoke free stadia across Europe.
